🛍️ Ending Oregon’s plastic bag loophole

May 29, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning! Over the years, Portland has gotten outside attention for the things that make this city unique. Sometimes that can seem like a wild exaggeration. But there are plenty of reasons this city is incredible:

  • 🍴 The food scene — like Thai restaurants and Portland pizza with sourdough crust.
  • 🥾 Our access to the outdoors, with waterfall hikes and any visit to the Gorge.
  • 🚲 The bike infrastructure that allows you to ride to the bluffs for a picnic at sunset.

📲 Please share your view. We’ll read your answers on an upcoming City Cast Portland podcast 🎧

What's CITY Talking About?

First Wildfire of the Season

The first large wildfire of the season has already burned roughly 1,800 acres in eastern Oregon. The Butte Creek Fire near Clarno was first reported on Sunday. [OPB]

New Fees on Top of Water Rate Hike

The average Portland water and sewer bill will be up $500 per year in July, compared with the bill before the pandemic. Now the city is adding additional fees, too, for anyone who pays with a credit or debit card. They’ll amount to just over $50 annually for the typical household. [Oregonian]

Closing a Plastic Bag Loophole

The Legislature has strengthened the state’s ban on grocery stores and restaurants giving out plastic bags. The previous law allowed stores to distribute heavier-duty plastic bags that theoretically could be used multiple times — a practice that will now be prohibited. The law will still allow the kind of plastic bags used for bulk goods and produce. [OPB]
