Test your knowledge of Portland's many local governments

May 22, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Just 48 hours remain in our spring membership campaign — and we need seven new members to reach our goal!

We send this newsletter out to thousands of Portlanders every day, totally free 🗞️ That’s because we believe in local journalism that informs, connects, and strengthens our city, but we need your help to keep it up 🤝

What's CITY Talking About?

Underemployed Apes

As of September 30, there were 446 Japanese macaque apes living in the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Hillsboro. Animal rights activists have renewed their push to close down the facility, citing cruelty, but also that the apes aren’t actually used for effective research purposes. [Willamette Week]

Nonprofits Will Continue To Give Out Tents

After its change in policy, Multnomah County won’t distribute tents and tarps unless there’s severe weather. But nonprofits that work with people experiencing homelessness will continue to distribute them; that’s one reason Portlanders might continue to see tents and tarps. [KGW]

Colbert Roasts a New Portland Mascot

Calling him (or it) “a porno version of the Grinch,” Late Show host Stephen Colbert declared Portland’s newest mascot, Saucy T. Sausage, “horrifying.” Saucy is the official creature of the new minor league soccer team, the Portland Bangers. [Oregonian]

With so many city, county, and state jurisdictions overlapping in Portland, keeping track of who does what can sometimes feel like an impossible task.

The City Cast Portland podcast team tests their knowledge of local governments today. But do you really know the difference between PBOT and TriMet? We've got an opportunity for you to test your knowledge too.

Here's the first question, which will link through to the interactive quiz:

1. When I find trash on the corner of a public street or on I-84, I call the city to clean it up.

A True

B False

Answers will appear at the end.
