What's CITY Talking About?
Columbia River Treaty Troubles
The Columbia River Treaty was signed 60 years ago after the flooding of Vanport, Ore. Canada agreed to build dams to manage flooding, and in exchange, the U.S. gave Canada half the additional electricity generated. But the deal expired at the end of last year, and President Trump has called Canada “the 51st state” while pausing negotiations. [New York Times]
Climate Deaths' Wildfire Connection
New research from Oregon State University links climate change to increased deaths caused by fine particulate matter emitted from wildfires. During a 15-year period, 160,000 deaths could be attributed to smoke's fine-particulate matter. “That’s more than you would get in hurricanes,” said Bev Law, a professor of Global Change Biology at Oregon State University. Liquor Scandal Fine Was Too Low
The state Ethics Commission has rejected a proposed $500 fine for former liquor commission director Steve Marks. Marks and other OLCC officials face fines for using their position to improperly obtain Pappy Van Winkle bourbon and other rare liquors from the state’s reserve inventory. [Oregonian 🔒]
Trail Blazers Are for Sale
More than six years since the death of Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen, his estate is finally moving to sell the team. The decision has implications for more than fans — it raises questions about the team’s future ties to the city. [Oregonian]
