May 2, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Drumroll, please!

In honor of 503 Day’s celebration of our city, I asked for your suggestions for the bumper sticker that most perfectly captures Portland right now.

And after a vote, here are the winners:

  • 1st place: My Other Car Is Also a Subaru
  • 2nd place: I’d Rather Be Slowly Consumed by Moss (available on Etsy)
  • 3rd place (tied): It's Pronounced Couch St.
  • 3rd place (tied): No, You Go First. No, You Go First.

Thank you to everyone who submitted an idea and voted!

What's DC Talking About

Fainting Workers Raise Questions About Nike Sweatshop Pledge

Workers have regularly fainted from the heat or other conditions at factories where Nike goods were made, raising questions about the global company’s decades-old pledge to end its relationship with sweatshops. For example, an independent investigation documented temperatures over 98 degrees and workers skipping water and bathroom breaks to save time as a source of the fainting at one Vietnamese factory. This is why we gotta legalize it federally, y'all. I'm not joking.

Where Is It?

Ankeny Alley is the place to be tomorrow for our 503 Day block party. And not coincidentally it was last week’s scavenger hunt.

A few readers got the not-too-subtle message I dropped into the segment last week:

  • “It's home to the world-famous 503 Day celebration,” writes reader Rick Turoczy.
  • “This is the always beautiful and bustling Ankeny Alley Plaza, home to the upcoming City Cast Portland blowout, I mean block party on May 3, in celebration of 503 Day,” writes reader Heidi Franklin.

Marcos was among the readers to note that the sculpture was part of 2024 Winter Light Festival — "Nautilus Deep Sea," by Sparks Designs.

A couple readers lamented the Portland establishments that used to be nearby:

  • “Played near there at Buskathon. Used to be the home of [sniff] The 24-Hour Church of Elvis. 😥“ writes Leo S.
  • “Valentines used to be there, I miss that spot.” writes reader Ben Toledo.

A shoutout to the first 10 readers to name the location: Heidi Franklin, Steven Mc, Deanna S-O, Lori S., Amy M., Ella B., David C., Brian C., Rosanne Marmor, and Rick Turoczy.

This week’s scavenger hunt comes from reader Leigh Anne K.

Where is this mural?

Please click here to send me the location — and anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — and for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly (and reveal the answer).

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
