In-state tuition is up 30%
April 29, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! 🌼 The Columbia River Gorge is always breathtakingly scenic, but with wildflower season underway, there are some particularly beautiful spots to visit.
Check out the Mosier Plateau, Lyle Cherry Orchard Loop, and Dalles Mountain Ranch (or other ideas from Portland Monthly for spring hikes).

What's DC Talking About
Tuition Up Nearly 30% Over Last Decade
Tuition for Oregon’s public universities is about to go up by 3 to 5% this fall — and continues a trend of increases for each of the last 10 years. Inflation and labor costs are driving the tuition hikes, but Oregon also ranks 32nd among states for its underinvestment in colleges and universities, according to the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association. A Push for Investigations After a 911 Call
A small Catholic school in Northeast Portland called police on a Black mother and father (Moda Health executive Karis Stoudamire-Phillips and professional jazz musician Mike Phillips), who came to talk to the principal and comfort their son, who had reported being called the n-word at recess. The Madeleine School went on to expel their son. The broader Madeleine community has called for an investigation. [Oregonian 🔒]
Multnomah County Budget Class
Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez is pushing the county to increase his office's funding, despite its being a year when County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson is proposing 10% cuts to most departments. Vega Pederson notes she’s increasing the overall public safety budget with no cuts to the sheriff’s office, while Vasquez argues she should cut the homeless services budget. [OPB]
