City Cast Portland
The Oregon senator going after Trump’s tariffs
April 23, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! In less than two weeks, it’ll be 503 Day 📲 That’s the celebration of our city on May 3 — we chose 5/03 for our area code 503.
🎉 You’re invited to our block party to celebrate, but the totally real holiday is still under development, so here are some ideas for holiday traditions that the City Cast Portland podcast came up with last year.

What's CITY Talking About?
A Month Without Homicides
Portland just went 30 days without a homicide for the first time in two years. Crime is down this year, but that gap in violence came after a series of fatal shootings in March. In 2020, before the pandemic lockdowns and a rise in crime, Portland saw an 84-day gap between acts of deadly violence. [Oregonian]

I wish I could give some sugar coating to this….This is going to be a huge battle.
Legislation To Roll Back Trump Tariffs
Oregon companies — including the tech company Sinotech and Bob’s Red Mill — told U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) this week that they’re facing financial uncertainty in the face of President Trump’s trade war. Wyden is beginning a push to roll back the Trump tariffs, with a vote on his bipartisan-backed legislation expected as soon as next week. [Oregonian 🔒]
- Related: Almost none of the 10 Republican state lawmakers who spoke to the Oregonian about Trump’s trade policies said they support tariffs. But they also didn’t oppose the President or his approach, with many voicing support for aspects of Trump's trade policies. [Oregonian]
If the day comes that people are saying, ‘Here’s the negative impact, and you better reverse course,’ I know [Trump] well enough, in my opinion, to say that he would reverse course.
Lake Oswego Boating Restrictions
The city has come up with rules for swimmers and boaters interested in visiting Oswego Lake after a lawsuit opened it to the general public. Under the proposal, motorboats, sailboats, and sailboards can’t be launched from the public park downtown. [KOIN]
