New rise in Mult. Co. homelessness

April 18, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Happy Easter to those who celebrate 🐥 And happy 4/20 Day — maybe that’s the more appropriate greeting for the many Portlanders who won’t be at church this Sunday (more on that below). Easter this year falls on the unofficial stoner holiday 🍃

What's CITY Talking About?

Fewer Christians in Oregon

Many local churches may have empty pews this Easter Sunday: Oregon has seen a dramatic decline in the number of adults who identify as Christians — from 67% in 2007 to 43% in 2024. The religion's decline has halted nationally, but not in this state. [Oregonian]

New Data Shows Even More Homelessness

On the weekly news roundup, the number of people experiencing homelessness is still growing each month in Multnomah County. New and improved data show 14,824 people are experiencing homelessness here. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

  • What’s working — and what’s not? Only 15% of people who stayed in standard, communal homeless shelters moved out for permanent housing during the last fiscal year. By contrast, more than 50% of those who stayed in village-style shelters or other alternative shelters did. [Oregonian 🔒]

“It's Jackie Robinson, number 42! He was the first Black player in the MLB,” writes reader Andrea Pastor.

The mural of baseball great Jackie Robinson and his famous jersey was aptly chosen for the spot where it’s located — at Northeast 42nd Avenue and Sumner Street. The building housed the business district’s office Our 42nd Avenue. Artist John Vance created the mural back in 2016.

A shoutout to the readers who knew the spot and each offered a bit of their knowledge about the mural and its location: Lexa, Shannon Wilson, Deanna Schindler-Ord, and Mark McClure.

And for a second week in a row we have a reader submission for the scavenger hunt from Stephan Vertal.

Where is this elusive figure?

Please click here to send me the location — and anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — and for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly (and reveal the answer).

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!
