A Growing Number of Teachers Are Absent a Lot

Oregon, unlike some other states, doesn’t track teacher absenteeism. But teacher absences rose during the pandemic and its aftermath. [Oregonian 🔒]

  • Data: In the Centennial Schools District last school year, 68% of teachers missed upwards of 11 days. In Portland Public Schools, the year before the strike, 58% of teachers missed that much school. [Oregonian 🔒]

More Noncitizens Registered

The Oregon DMV discovered 118 additional people who were not citizens, but had still been registered to vote under the state’s motor voter program. The DMV previously acknowledged that 1,619 people whose information was improperly forwarded to the Elections Division for registration. In the new group, 116 of these errors were discovered when the individuals sought a REAL ID; 13 of them had voted. [Willamette Week]

Trade War’s Impacts on Oregon

Oregon has a trade surplus with other countries, meaning the trade war could have a dire impact — including on Intel, the state’s largest private employer. The state will also be acutely impacted by tariffs, which would have totaled $7 billion if they’d been levied against goods being imported last year. [Oregonian]
