Deadline extension for airport security ID

April 11, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning! 🌲 In a town full of nature lovers, it’s no surprise that Portland has some trees so beloved they’re basically local celebrities.

Some are old, like an apple tree planted in 1850 in the Hillsdale neighborhood 🍎 Some are distinctive, like the dwarf Alberta spruce at Mill Ends Park 🍀 And some are Portland-weird — like the wish tree on Northeast 7th Avenue.

Among my personal favorites are a carefully sculpted maple and a small stand of sequoias — both of which I discovered during pandemic walks — as well as any monkey puzzle tree I run across 🧩

What's CITY Talking About?

Visas Revoked for 4 U of O Students

Four international students at the University of Oregon have had their visas revoked, giving them 15 days to leave the country or find another legal way to stay. They’re swept up in a federal immigration crackdown that's included students with even minor infractions, like traffic violations. [KLCC via OPB]

RIP to Police Accountability Advocate

Dan Handelman, a long-time advocate for police accountability, died this week at age 60. Best known for his Portland Copwatch project that involved careful tracking of police activity, Handelman sat on city oversight committees beginning more than two decades ago. [Oregonian]

I don't think it's alarmist to be pretty concerned about these types of surveillance tools being pushed further and further into our lives.

Technological Assists to Law Enforcement?

On the Friday news roundup, two bills in Salem would give police more leeway to use technology. One would require felony suspects to have their DNA swabbed at arrest instead of if they’re convicted. Another would allow law enforcement to use drones to chase suspects and respond to 911 calls. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

REAL ID Deadline Flexibility

As of March 31, only 35.7% of Oregonians had REAL ID compliant identification. But now there’s some flexibility — at least at airports beyond the May 7 deadline. [KGW]

This soccer-themed mural is in the St. Johns neighborhood — on the Leavitt Station building next to Betos Taqueria.

We had one correct answer this week, so a shoutout to reader Hunter Sunrise.

Staying with the sports theme, this week’s scavenger hunt is from reader Stephan Vertal:

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — and for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly (and reveal the answer).

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!

🧸 Local toy stores are among the businesses facing significant costs from Trump tariffs. Tariffs have been paused for many countries, though Chinese tariffs (where many toys originate) have not.

🧥 Meanwhile, local outdoor apparel company Showers Pass says 80% of their products originate in China. A $100 jacket now will cost $300 with tariffs.

“So we’re in a crazy situation where we have finished product in our factory that our consumers and customers want and need, and we don’t dare move it because we don’t have the cash flow to pay the tariffs,” the CEO told KOIN.
