Goodbye to a weird I-5 landmark

April 4, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! ☀️ Good news: You can expect warm, sunny weather today and tomorrow!

But also: Beware of the high pollen count that arrives with spring 💐

What's CITY Talking About?

A Tax Hike Proposal for Funding Shortfall

Three Portland city councilors want to increase the tax levied for the city’s clean energy program and use that money to address the looming $93 million budget shortfall. Specifically, they’d up the 1% gross receipts tax on major retailers to 1.33%. [Oregonian 🔒]

Goodbye to Landmark Billboard

The drive to Seattle is about to get a little friendlier for liberal Portlanders. A billboard that since 1967 has featured Uncle Sam and various conservative messages (with varying degrees of coherence) will likely disappear. The owners of the land are selling. [Willamette Week]

If I were to give someone a million dollars to build an ADU and they came back and were like, 'We built a bird house,' that doesn't seem OK.

Where Is It?

This mural at Southwest 36th Avenue and Canby Street in Multnomah Village was a project of the neighborhood association a couple years back.

“I am one of the co-leaders of that painting project!” writes reader Pam Fox. “The mural was funded by a small grant from the city.”

The day to refresh the paint on the mural is coming up soon — June 21. And reader Peter Samson, Multnomah Neighborhood Association board member, writes with an invitation to paint: “Come join us!”

Apparently the steep hill near the mural was known for an unusual pastime: “apple bowling. The tree died last year — and with it the tradition,” writes reader Robert.

A shoutout to the rest of the readers who knew the location: Amy M., Corinne, Pepper R, and Robin Schauffler.

This week’s submission is from reader Annette Morrison:

Where is this celebration of Portland soccer? Please click here to send me the location — and anything you know about it.

If you’re new to the newsletter, there’s a scavenger hunt every Friday. Please send me the location if you know it — and for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers who respond correctly (and reveal the answer).

📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming “Where Is It?” segment!

What To Do

Friday, April 4

Saturday, April 5

Sunday, April 6

Saturday, May 3

🪧 On Saturday there’ll be 800 protests against the Trump administration around the country, including (not surprisingly) downtown Portland.

More unexpectedly, there’ll also be Hands Off protests in East Portland, Washington County, and more rural parts of the states.
