Republicans Want to Ditch Vote by Mail
Republican-sponsored legislation in Salem would repeal vote by mail. While it’s unlikely to pass Oregon’s Democratic-controlled Legislature, it comes as President Trump is demanding that proof of citizenship be required at the polls. Only seven other states mail a ballot to each registered voter. [KOIN]
UPS Eliminating 244 Jobs in Portland
UPS announced plans late last week to eliminate 244 jobs at the company’s Swan Island location as the company automates some work. Meanwhile, Oregon’s unemployment rate was 4.5% in February — the highest it’s been since 2021. [Oregonian]
Amtrak Record Ridership Threatened
Nearly a million riders took Amtrak’s regional service between Eugene and Vancouver, B.C. last year, beating out 2019 for peak ridership. But Amtrak’s problem with corroded train cars is a new impediment to local efforts to boost ridership. [Washington State Standard via Oregonian]
