The feds slash Oregon food deliveries
March 31, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! Portland Police Chief Bob Day is trying to address some of the city’s toughest safety issues — including at least seven murders this month. But how does he prioritize calls — the ones that get a swift response and the ones that just go nowhere? Chief Day explains on today’s City Cast Portland podcast.
When we talk about crime, we also talk about the fear of crime: The fear of crime is much more damaging to a community than even the actual crime itself.

What's CITY Talking About?
Trump Administration’s Cuts Include Emergency Food
For at least the next three months, the federal government is halting shipments for about $6 million worth of food to the Oregon Food Bank — accounting for 18% of the food the group receives from the federal government each month. It’s part of nationwide cuts and comes at a time when more families are seeking help. [OPB]
No Transition Away From Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers?
Next year, Portland homeowners — and their contractors — were supposed to start using electric leaf blowers in lieu of noisy gas-powered options. But as part of Multnomah County’s budget crunch, the county Health Department is proposing to cut the position that would help with education and enforcement. [Oregonian 🔒]
Movement on Capping Class Size
A bill to require districts to bargain with their teachers union over class sizes is poised to make it out of the Oregon House committee on education. But there may be unintended consequences: Portland Public Schools, which did negotiate over class size, has opted to pay teachers when class sizes exceed the maximum — instead of creating additional classes.
