Affordable Housing Provider Selling 80 Homes

An affordable housing nonprofit, REACH Community Development, is selling off 80 single-family homes in Portland, choosing to focus on apartment buildings as it tries to deal with rising costs. The tenants of the homes include a woman who has been in her home since 1972. REACH says it’s working to offer tenants the chance to buy the homes or live in one of its apartments. [KGW]

The newsletter recently featured a segment on toxic Portland traits, and I solicited your views about what beliefs or habits are very Portland but maybe time to let go of.

Here’s how readers responded:

“The constant complaining about how it used to be better — either because it’s too gritty now, or not gritty enough, or whatever. I get it with material realities like housing, but good lord, I’ve never lived somewhere where people talked this amount of shit about their own city! Which remains, IMO, a pretty great place to live.” — Lauren

“Littering! No reason as there are garbage/ recycling bins in many public places. Bring back the ’70s ‘Give a hoot, don't pollute’ ads.” — Heidi

“Looking at their phones when driving, looking at their phones when crossing the street just assuming people are going to stop! Do they secretly have a death wish????” — Jeanne F.

“Queuing on line: Portlanders give way too much space between each other waiting on line.” — Brett S.

“I try to bike whenever I can because Portland has such a nice bike culture and great infrastructure, but I get incredibly annoyed when I’m driving and someone is biking on a busy car thoroughfare. There’s almost always a parallel bike route to the main road. I’m like why is this person biking on Division when Clinton is right there?! I’m sure it’s because people just don’t know the bike route and are looking at Apple Maps instead of looking at PBOT’s bike map. With just a tiny bit of work you can find the route that’s 10x more enjoyable and safe on a bike and doesn’t slow down car traffic.” — Jodi D.

🔨 Construction on a new Portland Mercado building will begin next month. After a fire in January 2024, the food cart reopened, but the building’s future was uncertain. The aim is for the marketplace and community hub to be back up and running by early next year.
