📉 Sen. Ron Wyden on Trump’s local impact
March 18, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

At packed town halls, Sen. Ron Wyden is hearing a lot of local concern. He breaks down why Oregon could be disproportionately impacted by Trump policies like tariffs as well as cuts to fighting wildfires. 🎧

What's CITY Talking About?
Feasting on Roadkill
Harvesting roadkill in Oregon is on the rise. The state has issued more than 8,000 salvage permits for collecting deer or elk since 2019, when the Legislature began officially allowing it. There are now 11,000 members in the Facebook group, “Oregon Roadkill Recovery,” passing on tips to one another. [The Source Weekly via OPB]
Rally for Tax Increases

Attention-Grabbing Spa
Northeast Portland now has a wine spa — where you can soak in a bath of wine, which would otherwise get thrown out because of production errors. Just four months after opening, The Wine Spa made Time Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places of 2025. [Time]

Roses & Thorns

Katie Rasmussen’s job is to look for the right location when Hollywood comes to town.
But as part of this ongoing segment celebrating Portland, she shared the reasons the city is the right location for her too:
What a Movie Location Manager Loves About Portland
“I feel like Portlanders are so friendly — you can start talking to anyone at a coffee shop and just suddenly it's like ‘Cheers,’ and then they know your name,” says Rasmussen. “The sense of community is pretty strong.”
Her Favorite Location: Easily Accessible Forests
“I'm a big outdoorsy person,” says Rasmussen. “I love being in nature and being in the trees. So I go to Mount Tabor at least once a week just to walk around. It's like having a little urban forest right in the middle of the city. And as a part of my job, we've actually shot parts of Mount Tabor as though it's the Mount Hood National Forest, depending on how you frame the camera. That's my happy place, for sure.”
What Makes Us Unique: Bike Meetups
“I feel like what makes Portland so awesome and weird and special is [that] all of a sudden you see a bike meet up with a bunch of people dressed in costume, just rolling down Division on Saturday at 4 o'clock,” says Rasmussen. ”Everyone's hanging out at the coffee shops or maybe at like their local bar, and everyone just comes outside and is like, 'Yeahhh!' Everyone else wants to root them on, and I feel that energy too."
🚲 Inside scoop: If you’re interested in bike meetups, here’s a calendar of local events.
