Good morning, Portland! The Oregon Zoo’s baby elephant is starting to learn how to use her trunk. She doesn’t yet sound like her elders, but she is imitating their “dust bathing” — spraying herself down with dirt, just like they do.

Vandalism in Lake Oswego

A kayaker who successfully sued to open Oswego Lake to the public celebrated with a paddle this past weekend. He returned to his car only to find it vandalized; now local police are investigating. [Oregonian]

No Avian Flu Outbreaks at Oregon Dairy Farms

Oregon is conducting weekly surveillance at dairy farms across the state, and while the H5N1 virus can make cows sick, there’s currently no sign of infection. But right now there are 54 known cases of H5N1 in Oregon — among poultry, cats, and one human. [OPB]
