🍨 An unexpected victim of Trump’s grant freeze
March 10, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! 🥶 There’s an unexpected victim of the Trump administration freeze on grants — a beloved frozen treats shop that was getting money for a literal freezer.
🍨 Cornet Custard, created by the late chef Naomi Pomeroy, had already spent the money from the federal grant they’d secured, and was left in the lurch. The shop first turned to GoFundMe and has since had their grant unfrozen 🍦

What's CITY Talking About?

The Portland Loo Is Famous Elsewhere
With bacterial dysentery on the rise in Portland, experts say investing in more access to public toilets would help. It’s a problem where the city has innovated in the past: The Portland Loo is a new kind of public restroom that’s been adopted by cities across the country. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Decline in Traffic Deaths Is Uneven
Good news: Last year, Portland’s traffic deaths dropped 16%, tracking a national decline in reckless driving. But bad news: East Portland, where almost half of traffic deaths occurred, didn’t see a drop. [OPB]
- Also: Traffic deaths among people walking, biking, or riding a motorcycle remained roughly the same citywide as in 2023. The decline was mainly for people in cars.
Tesla Attack
A Tigard Tesla dealership was hit by bullets after business hours last week. It’s not clear if there were political motivations, though Tesla has been a target of anti-Trump administration protesters. [KOIN]
