🪵🔥 The environmental hazard Portland loves

March 6, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! Here’s a deadline you may want to keep an eye on. Two months (and a day) from now, you’ll need a REAL ID at airport security ✈️

What's CITY Talking About?

The Harm From Wood Smoke

Wood stoves, along with wood-burning fireplaces, produce “more harmful particulate matter than diesel trucks and cigarette smoke,” the Oregonian reports. Multnomah County has been regulating wood fires for six years and has invested $1 million in funding wood stove replacements, but wood burning has only increased in Oregon’s urban areas. [Oregonian]

People don’t smell poison; they smell nostalgia. But we can’t have clean air if we have wood burning.
John Wasiutynski, director of Multnomah County's Office of Sustainability

Financial Problems at Ritz-Carlton Portland

The financial firm that holds the construction loan on the Ritz-Carlton Portland building is planning to foreclose on the property. Only 8% of condos have sold, and the hotel earned only $188 a room last year — compared with $343.28 for the average Ritz-Carlton. [Willamette Week]

Recurring Portland Protest

It’s unclear if protests at Tesla dealerships are contributing to the company’s stock value declining. But there are now regular demonstrations against car company CEO and Trump administration official Elon Musk at the Tesla dealership in South Waterfront. [Portland Mercury]
