🩺 A Portland cancer research breakthrough
February 14, 2025 · — Rachel Monahan
Happy 166th birthday, Oregon! 🎂 Did you know we have an official state drink, state dance, and state fruit?
🍐 To give away the answer on fruit, the Sugarpine Drive-In is celebrating the anniversary of Oregon statehood with a pear-filled menu! (It’s available through the end of the month — thank goodness, because roads might be treacherous today.)

What's CITY Talking About?
Nike Settles Sex Discrimination Lawsuit
A lawsuit over Nike’s treatment of women was set to go to trial in a month. But now the company has ended the public-relations nightmare, agreeing to pay not just the four remaining plaintiffs but (in a victory for the women who sued), a whole class of plaintiffs. [Oregonian 🔒]
OHSU Success With NIH Funding
Just days after the Trump administration announced plans to slash National Institutes of Health funding, Oregon Health & Science University researchers, who had NIH funding, announced the discovery of a new and effective way to detect pancreatic cancer early. It’s a discovery that highlights the power of federal funding. [Willamette Week]
That just shows how with these issues that we have in our city — sometimes the best person for the job doesn’t have the job.
Cancer Researchers Fight Crime Too
On the Friday news roundup, cancer researchers applied their data analysis techniques to Portland car thefts. And the all too common Portland crime fell dramatically last year. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

This mural by artist Will Corprew is at Northeast Martin Luter King Boulevard and Alberta Street. It’s located on the side of openHAUS, a Black-owned co-working space.
“It’s across from Cason's — a (the only?) Black-owned butcher shop in Portland. Great for smoked turkey, rare cuts of pork, and oxtail! Heart of Albina in many ways. The opposite [wall] has another mural — by Arvie Smith, a renowned Black painter and muralist in Portland — depicting the Vanport flood.” — Michael Bernard Stevenson Jr., who is himself a master artist.
A shoutout to him and reader Elaine, who also knew the location.
This week’s scavenger hunt is also for a mural:

Hints: Given the weather, it’s appropriate that it’s indoors. Also, it’s new — and so are the dining options that arrived at the same time as the mural.
If you’re new to the newsletter, every Friday there’s a scavenger hunt. Please send me the location if you know it — and for unofficial bonus points, anything you know about it. In next week’s newsletter, I’ll shout out the first 10 readers to respond correctly.
For regular readers, I’m asking you to submit responses in a relatively new way: Please click here to send me the location — and anything you know about it.
📸 Want to submit a photo? Please email me a snapshot of somewhere in the Portland metro area, and we’ll consider it for an upcoming Where Is It? segment!

🍓 I’d nominate the Hood strawberry or maybe just strawberries generally to be Oregon’s official state fruit, even if Oregon does grow a lot of pears.
But there are a bunch of other obscure state symbols that somehow seem appropriately Oregonian — including the Dungeness crab (the official crustacean), marionberry pie (the official pie), and Pacific golden chanterelle (the official mushroom).
I’ll see you on Tuesday after the holiday weekend!
