Avian Flu Monitoring?

There are financial safeguards for farms that report avian flu outbreaks — at least for the birds and eggs. But there’s a financial disincentive for workers and employers to find out if any humans are sick. None of the Pacific Northwest states are effectively monitoring workers — or requiring testing of humans at poultry farms that have had an outbreak. [InvestigateWest]

Growth in Anti-Vaxxers

The current whooping cough outbreak and recent measles cases highlight a growing problem — more people opting out of life-saving vaccines. Before the year 2000, just around 1% of kindergartners had an exemption from vaccines for nonmedical reasons. This year it’s 8.8%. [KGW]

Normally the Department of Labor is not a huge thing, but with the Trump administration so interested in tearing down parts of government, the Labor secretary could really come into play.
