🟥 Advice from a local Democrat who won a red district
November 11, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! Summer is the most obvious time to go to the coast, but Southern Oregon’s beaches are even better in fall. The weather can even be milder than in Portland 🌊

What's CITY Talking About?
People are putting their groceries on their credit card. No one is listening to anything else you say if you try to talk them out of their lived experiences with data points.
Democrats Win the Two Local Swing Districts
Considered one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents, U.S. Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D., Wash.) won her Republican-leaning district and says her party should stop ignoring working-class voters. “It is going to take parents of young kids, people in rural communities, people in the trades running for office and being taken seriously,” she says. - Related: A Democrat also won the other local swing district, Oregon’s District 5. State Rep. Janelle Bynum beat U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a first-term incumbent. Bynum will be Oregon’s first Black member of Congress. [OPB]
10 of 12 City Council Races Decided
We now know who won 10 of the 12 City Council seats. The Oregonian called eight of the races over the weekend. Two candidates won decisively on Election Day. The status of two races remains unclear. The new Council will include six women, at least five people of color, and three members of the Democratic Socialists of America. Here’s who’s won (so far): [Oregonian]
- District 1 (East Portland): Environmental justice advocate Candace Avalos and former Multnomah County Commissioner Loretta Smith. One seat is too close to call.
- District 2 (North Portland): Former city policy manager Sameer Kanal, policy strategist Elana Pirtle-Guiney, and current City Commissioner Dan Ryan.
- District 3 (Southeast): Teacher Tiffany Koyama Lane and policy advocate Angelita Morillo (as well as former City Commissioner Steve Novick, whose victory was determined on Election Day).
- District 4 (West Side): Energy economist Mitch Green (as well as former TriMet official Olivia Clark, who won decisively on Election Day). One seat is too close to call.

☕ Jim and Patty’s Coffee (in both Beaverton and Northeast) will close today. They’re beloved spots. Plus, Jim and Patty Roberts were big names in the business ages ago. In the 1990s, they had a successful chain of Coffee People shops, which went so far as to become a public company though it obviously never succeeded in rivaling Starbucks.
