✅ Portland has a new mayor!

November 7, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Hello! A lot of Portland experienced an epically bad day yesterday, courtesy of national politics.

If you’re bracing for another four years of President Donald Trump, I won’t try to reassure you. But I will offer you some options for focusing on something else — at least some of the time.

What's CITY Talking About?

Keith Wilson To Be Mayor

Political outsider Keith Wilson has pulled off an unexpected upset in the Portland mayor’s race — the first time the city has used ranked-choice voting. Wilson, who runs a trucking company, emerged as a leading candidate last month after scandals rocked the campaign of a leading opponent. [Oregonian]

Leading City Council Candidates

As of 8 p.m. on Wednesday, most City Council races remained too close to call. But the frontrunners remain the same after an updated count. If those candidates win, the new Council will have a political balance that includes five “stauch progressive” and four moderates. The next ballot count is expected this evening. [Willamette Week]

Portland Voter Turnout Plummeted

Votes are still being counted across the state, but it’s clear that the turnout was far lower than in past presidential years. According to an estimate from Multnomah County, just 68% of voters turned in a ballot this November — far lower than the 80% turnout in the last two presidential elections. [Oregonian]

Clackamas County Boots Its Conservative Chair

Clackamas County chair Tootie Smith, among the region’s highest-profile Republicans, lost her bid for reelection. Retired Sheriff Craig Roberts, a moderate Democrat, will replace her. [Oregonian]
