🏥 Oregon doctors poised for historic strike
October 25, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! As you open your ballot with a lot more choices, do you have questions about how your vote will be counted — and when you’ll know who actually won? Here are some answers.

What's CITY Talking About?
A Doctors Strike Would Be a First for Oregon
Doctors and nurses at two Providence locations have authorized a strike after upwards of nine months of negotiations with management. If they move forward it would be the first strike by doctors in state history. [KGW]
PDX’s Bird-Strike Prevention Team
An Alaska Airlines plane hit a bird and returned to PDX last weekend. It’s not an isolated incident — with the Port of Portland employing a team of 10 wildlife experts to try to avoid bird-plane collisions. They monitor for birds, trap them (to release elsewhere), and scare them away with “horns, sirens, lasers and even specialty fireworks,” the Oregonian reports. [Oregonian 🔒]
In a way we're playing catch up, which is wild because we decriminalized cannabis in the ’70s.
The Cannabis Industry Ballot Measure
On the Friday news roundup, cannabis is still illegal federally, creating a “messy, messy, messy” situation, says Willamette Week cannabis reporter and author Brianna Wheeler. Next month, voters will weigh Measure 119 — whether to give cannabis workers an easier way to unionize and potentially the protections that a labor union provides. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

This public artwork “Animals in Pools,” dates back to 1986, after the installation of the city’s light-rail lines. It’s not just a bear but also beavers, sea otters, and more:
“I like the ducks in the water as well. SOMETIMES they get decorated during the Winter Light Festival. Fantastic.” — Greg Lang
“Sadly none of the animals were in pools either this year or last. The fountains were not on.” — Nanci Courtney
Here’s a shoutout to the rest of the first 10 readers who knew the location: Philip A Hubert III, Scott Pedemonte, Rosie Fiallo, Derek B, Scarlett Paau, Brian Finlayson, Debi Bradway, Reagan Bauman, and Emily Seburg.
Here’s this week’s scavenger hunt:

Do you know the spot? Please email me the location and your name as you’d like it to appear in next Friday’s newsletter for the reader shoutout.
