What's CITY Talking About?

Amazon Data Centers To Go Nuclear?

Amazon wants to build small modular nuclear reactors in Washington to power its data centers in eastern Oregon. The company has announced they’re funding a two-year look at the “environmental, safety, permitting and licensing issues,” the Oregonian reports. [Oregonian 🔒]

Move To Dissolve County-City Homeless Office

After a 90-day review of the city-county Joint Office of Homeless Services, three members of the outgoing Portland City Council are asking to break off the agreement. Commissioners Rene Gonzalez, Dan Ryan, and Mingus Mapps asked city attorneys to draft an ordinance to withdraw the city from the agreement; none have presented an alternative approach yet. Having kind of a parity, even in a two-person race, is pretty rare. The last example I can think of is probably Blumenauer versus Katz. And I was a junior in high school when that was going down.

The Upside-Down Mayoral Race

On the Friday news roundup, come for insights on the Portland mayoral race, which was a two-way contest, but now has a new frontrunner: political outsider Keith Wilson. Stay for a discussion how ranked choice voting will impact the results: “I realized that I don't know how ranked choice works. I thought I explained this to people; I thought I understood. And I was like, ‘Wait, he wins?’” says City Cast Portland host Claudia Meza. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

What inspires you? (John Notarianni / City Cast Portland)

Portland artist Gary Hirsch started creating BotJoy back in 2010, first painting robots with inspiring messages on the back of dominos, then on murals throughout the city and the world. (You can support his work on Etsy.) This mural is at Kiln, on Southeast 11th and Hawthorne Avenues.

There are several similar murals around town, so it’s understandable that a few of you guessed a different location. (I did too; thanks to City Cast Portland executive producer John Notarianni for this Where Is It? hunt.)

A shoutout to readers Philip A Hubert III, Julie Taraska, Brian Finlayson, Heidi, and Bry, who identified the correct location.

Here’s this week’s scavenger hunt:

This week is a bit of public art. Where’s it located? And what do you know about it?
