City Cast Portland

🚆 Union Station is for sale.

October 11, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Happy Friday! This is the final day I’m asking for this favor: Could you take two minutes to fill out our Hey Portland reader survey if you haven’t already? 💌

And I have something for you if you do: 📧 Email me a screenshot of the last page of the survey (where it says, “Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Hey Portland!”), and I’ll mail a City Cast Portland sticker and a fun fact about Portland to the first 10 people. Even if you’re not one of the first 10 emailers, I’ll still respond to you with a fun Portland fact.

Have I convinced you yet?

What's CITY Talking About?

Rubio’s Apology Tour Didn’t Fully Explain Ticketing

Mayoral candidate Carmen Rubio attributed her 150 parking tickets over two decades to working in "an area that was heavily patrolled by ticketing enforcement” around the Lloyd District’s Left Bank building. But fewer than a third came from that area, and of those tickets, two-thirds were when she showed no proof of paying for parking. [Oregonian 🔒]

For Sale: Portland’s Union Station

Portland was in talks to sell Union Station to Amtrak, but now the national train system has lost interest. So the city’s development agency is now looking for a buyer willing to spend $250 million on renovating the station. [Oregonian 🔒]

Should State Officials Make More Money?

For the Friday news roundup, Measure 116 would launch a commission to decide whether to raise state officials’ pay if voters approve it. Plus, Salt & Straw opened a shop in NYC to salty reviews. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

The totem pole (near Chart House, on Southwest Terwilliger Avenue) is the work of Native artist Chief Lelooska. Carved from a red cedar that grew near Mt. Adams, it’s 50 feet tall. A beaver is its base, with a grizzly bear next to a raven atop that, followed by four watchmen. The totem pole was crafted during Oregon's Centennial in 1959. The artist, Lelooska (1933-1996), whose name means “He Who Cuts Against Wood with a Knife,” was born Cherokee and adopted into the Kwakwaka'wakw. He was known not just for his carving but his storytelling.

A shoutout to the first 10 readers who identified the location: Sharon Richey, Jacquie T, Joe Gordon, Monica Groshong Heffernan, Lindsay Pollard, Carol C, David Castillo, Rochella Farnand, Pam Maxon, and Colleen Bourassa, who wrote, “Many good memories of eating there for special occasions.”

And here’s this week’s scavenger hunt:
