What's CITY Talking About?

Pausing the Signature Motor Voter Registration

Gov. Tina Kotek has paused Oregon’s signature program of automatically registering Oregonians who visit the DMV. A total of 1,561 noncitizens were improperly added to Oregon’s voting rolls, including 302 newly discovered cases. The majority of the new cases were from the U.S. territory of American Samoa and incorrectly classified as U.S. citizens. [Willamette Week]

TikTok Addictive to Kids?

Oregon has joined a dozen other states and Washington, D.C., in suing TikTok, alleging the app misled the public and aims to be addictive to young people. TikTok already faces a U.S. ban early next year if it doesn’t sever ties with its Chinese parent company. [NPR]

Michael Jordan’s $1M Gift to Providence

The basketball superstar Michael Jordan has donated $1 million to Providence Health & Services in honor of the man who helped negotiate the development of his signature Air Jordan shoes at Nike. Howard “H” White received a heart transplant at the hospital, and Jordan’s money will go toward creating a heart center in his name. [Oregonian 🔒]

🍨 Salt & Straw has continued its expansion, with openings in New York City. But the ice cream shop that channels Portland-weird with some unusual flavors got a roasting from a tabloid newspaper critic there, including this take on one seasonal flavor:

“Beware Creepy Crawlies at all costs,” the New York Post review states. “I don’t know whether the candied insect fragments under matcha ice cream were chocolate covered crickets or toffee brittle mealworms — but the happily deceased organisms felt like they were squirming on my tongue and throat. I threw the whole thing away before I took time to investigate — and you probably will, too.”
