Portland Street Response’s Latest Kerfuffle

Citing a need to stay out of politics, Portland City Hall abruptly canceled a briefing for City Council candidates on Portland Street Response, the program designed to send unarmed responders to mental health crises. By comparison, the fire bureau proceeded with a briefing last week on the CHAT program (Community Health Assess and Treat), which fire officials have been more supportive of. [Willamette Week]

Nike Private Jets Go More Private

An August investigation by the Oregonian and ProPublica found that Nike was using its private jets more, helping to increase the company’s carbon emissions. Since the investigation, the company has made it harder to track its jets — removing them from public view on the flight-tracking website FlightAware. It is, however, still possible to track them on other databases. [Oregonian / ProPublica]

Local Pickleball Goes Pro

Starting tomorrow, the professional Portland Pickleball League will be up and running. Sixteen players on four teams will play six regular season matches — on Tuesdays at RECS, an indoor pickleball venue in Clackamas. The matches will be broadcast live on RECS’ YouTube channel. [Willamette Week]

☕ Coava Coffee got a shoutout from comedian Alex Falcone, who has an interesting hack for finding excellent coffee while on tour: Check the two-star reviews for customers who are pissed but still can’t help but acknowledge excellence.

It seems mostly true from my look at Coava (4.4 stars on Yelp overall). A representative two-star review read, “Coffee's good though. But not good enough to justify the attitude.”
