Portland's superstar swifts

September 16, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! If you haven’t gone over to Chapman Elementary School to watch the Vaux’s swifts at sunset this September, here’s a little inspiration for you.

What's CITY Talking About?

Pamplin Pension Lawsuit

The federal government is suing former newspaper magnate Dr. Robert Pamplin Jr., who was once Oregon’s second wealthiest individual, for taking tens of millions from “unsuspecting pensioners in exchange for cash,” Willamette Week reports. He sold off property his company owned to his company’s pension fund (which, in a conflict of interest, he also controlled). [Willamette Week]

Federal Case Against Kroger, Albertsons To Finish This Week

A federal court case seeking to block the largest-ever grocery store merger is stretching into its fourth week in Portland. The final arguments over the $25 billion merger case are expected by Tuesday, though the timeline on when the judge will decide the case remains unclear. [Oregonian 🔒]

Greenwashing by NW Natural

Seven years after promising to bring renewable natural gas to customers, NW Natural, the largest natural gas company in the state, sells as much fossil fuel on average as it did before the pledge. In the meantime, it has successfully lobbied and sued to halt climate regulation, while launching a massive public relations campaign for gas. [ProPublica]

A full display. (Bryan M. Vance / City Cast)

In the latest installment of Portland bumper stickers, check out this collection, courtesy of Bryan M. Vance, a Montavilla resident and City Cast director of digital strategy.

The print gets small on the bumper stickers, so for the record, they are:

  • “I used to be cool.”
  • “Adults on board, we want to live too.”
  • “Dislexics are teople poo.” [Spelling errors intended.]
  • “Earth sucks, build a spaceship.”
