The trouble with Portland candidates swapping donations

September 13, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Look out for more rain this weekend (maybe)! 🌧️ And if it’s dry enough for construction, watch out for a shutdown of the Hawthorne Bridge, from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday 🏗️

City Council Candidates’ Donation Trading

On the Friday news roundup, not only was there a major story in the Portland mayoral race this week; there’s a potential scandal in the City Council races. Multiple candidates agreed in writing to swap donations with one another, in a potentially illegal scheme. More donations means the possibility of unlocking public funding. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Usually in campaigns, it's like they're the enemy. If they win, we lose. We have this crazy dynamic in these council races where they're all having fun with each other and talking to each other.

Measles Outbreak Worst in Two Decades

Oregon had an outbreak of 31 measles cases this year, the most the state has seen since 1991. All the recorded cases, which centered around Marion County, involved people who hadn’t been vaccinated. [KOIN]

Local Bans on Psilocybin Treatment

In 16 cities as well as unincorporated areas of Clackamas County, voters will weigh a ban (some permanent, some temporary) on the use of psilocybin. Oregon now has legal psilocybin treatment, but some places within the state have already barred the practice, at least temporarily. [OPB]

Where Is It?

The mural "Resiliency of Nature," designed by Jennifer Mark and painted by Juliet Moran and Jennifer Mark, is on Southeast 13th Avenue and Lambert in Sellwood.

Here’s some of what I heard from readers:

  • “It's painted on the south wall of the four-story ‘The Katniss’ (yes, that's what it's called) apartment building…The mural isn't the first time the south wall was painted. Back in October 2018, an anonymous critic of a spate of new apartments on 13th editorialized that "2 stories is PLENTY!" — John A. Reesman, who also included a mention that the mural overlooks Wei Wei, an “underappreciated” Taiwanese restaurant.
  • “One of my favorite parts of Sellwood.” — Lily Leblanc
  • “It kind of creeps me out, it looks like a gigantic snake.” — Mary Jo Kolb, a nearby neighbor

A shoutout to them and the other readers who identified the spot: Aimée Bonneval, Scott Pedemonte, Grey J., and Mark Gonzalez. Thanks for playing along.
