A hint of school closure fights to come
September 12, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! The gray skies are such an abrupt shift after last week’s heat wave ☁️ Not that I’m complaining, but there’s no easing into Portland’s crazy ever-changing weather.

What's CITY Talking About?
The Coming Fight Over School Closures
Portland-area districts are struggling with the contentious issue of closing schools in the face of declining enrollment. The West Linn-Wilsonville district is considering closing multiple elementary schools even as it’s constructing a new school building. [Oregonian 🔒]
- Related: The ideal elementary school size is 400 to 550 students, and Portland is projected to have 20 elementary schools with enrollment at 300 or less, when final attendance numbers become available next month. [Oregonian 🔒]
MusicPortland Apologizes
Nonprofit MusicPortland has apologized to the development firms working to build a Portland venue for Live Nation after a board member referenced “firebombing.” “In the process of reaching out to the music community,” board member Jamie Dunphy said in video recording, “more than one person suggested firebombs. I don’t encourage that, but we’re going to have a conversation … and see what our options are.” [OPB]
It’s like a single mom, right after work, walks in, the kids are screaming, they still have to make dinner. I feel like that’s Portland vibe right now.
