How bad is Oregon’s economy, really?
September 11, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan
Hello! Here’s a look ahead to November: Oregonians, like the rest of the country, have a negative outlook on the economy. How will that impact not just national elections but local ones? And how’s the economy doing anyway?
People feel rightly that they’ve earned higher pay. They didn’t do anything to deserve the higher bread prices.

What's CITY Talking About?
118 Candidates for Mayor and City Council
The Portland Metro Chamber (formerly, the Portland Business Alliance) plans to sit out the mayoral race. Nonetheless, some influential outside groups are likely to play an unusually large role in electing the next mayor and City Council, with 118 candidates in the running. [Oregonian 🔒]
Doubt Over the Impact of Measure 110
The chief criminal judge for Multnomah County, Michael Greenlick, cast doubt on the impact of repealing Measure 110. Looking at the first week since the repeal, Greenlick noted confusion over diverting defendants from court to treatment — and also the lack of public defenders, which could result in cases being dropped. Portland Tourism Bounces Back
The Foo Fighters concert at Providence Park, the Waterfront Blues Fest at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, and the Rockstar Energy Skateboarding Open inspired more visitors to go downtown this summer — the highest number since 2019. Occupancy rates at downtown hotels climbed 10% since last year. [KGW]
Community Cycling Center May Close
Community Cycling Center in Northeast Portland, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary, may close its doors. The nonprofit, which runs a used bike shop and many community programs, is short on funds. [Oregonian 🔒]
