Fred Meyer Workers Strike

Workers at 28 Portland-area Fred Meyers went out on strike yesterday. It comes the same week that the grocery’s parent company Kroger was defending its merger with Albertsons in federal court in Portland. Oregon’s United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 555 had supported the merger, but reversed course this month over the company’s tactics during the current contract negotiations. Benson HS Is Brand-New

Benson reopened this week in its new building after a three-year renovation. It’s the sixth high school in the district to get an upgrade, with three more to go: Jefferson, Cleveland, and Ida B. Wells. [Oregonian 🔒]

Climate Change Threatens Water Quality

Last year was the first time in more than 150 years that Portland’s watershed saw a major wildfire, and this summer’s record-setting wildfires in the state are a reminder that the climate is changing. With that, there’s a need for Portland’s planned water filtration plant. [OPB]
