A new project to make a deadly street safe

August 23, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Hello, Portland! 💌 An out-of-towner wanted a witness for a courthouse wedding, and now may get a full party of Portlanders, plus a dog in a party hat, homemade tortellini, and a Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster officiant 🐕 I love you, weird Portland ❤️

What's CITY Talking About?

Rainy August Weather

The weather has also been weird! The rain could continue into today, though it’s not time to get out the rain jackets just yet. Sunny and warmer weather should be back by the end of the weekend. [KOIN]

Struggling Affordable Housing Developers

Some of Oregon’s affordable housing developers are losing money or barely breaking as costs to operate their buildings are increasing. Insurance, electricity, and garbage rates have all risen. That could prove an obstacle for the state to build the affordable housing it needs over the next two decades — at least another 176,000 units. [Oregonian 🔒]

Fixing a Deadly Portland Street

The project to fix one of Portland’s most dangerous streets got started yesterday. Construction began along a 2.5-mile stretch of Northeast 82nd Avenue. In the decade from 2012 to 2021, 14 people died and 122 were critically injured after crashes on the street. [KOIN]

Camping Ban Bookings Resume

On the Friday news roundup, there’s an update on Multnomah County Sheriff Morrisey O'Donnell’s decision to book people cited for defying the city's camping ban. Initially, she didn’t want to use law enforcement resources for a housing problem, but now she’s agreed to do it for the next four months — and weigh her options then. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

Last week’s cat sculpture is a stop on the Coraline's Curious Cat Trail.

There are 31 sculptures scattered around downtown and a few points a little further spread out. They’re part of a 15th birthday celebration for the animated family-friendly horror film “Coraline.” You’re invited to walk or bike some part of the 11.7-mile trail connecting them. There’s even an app to “collect” your cat sightings. The statues will be auctioned off to benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital after the trail closes in October.

Here’s a shoutout to the readers who knew the answer: Marilyn M, Weston Ruter, Carol Holman, Phil Hochstetler, Sarah Johnson, as well as Carly and Becca, who saw it after the Bridge Pedal.

This week’s scavenger hunt is for a sculpture without a face. Where is it? What do you know about the statue? Please email me your answers.
