⚠️ Early signs of Portland budget cuts

August 16, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! One of the busiest libraries around — the Belmont Library — is closing at the end of the month for a year-and-a-half-long renovation and expansion. (A temporary space nearby will allow for neighborhood pickups of books put on hold.) 📚

What's CITY Talking About?

Live Nation Is a Step Closer to Opening

The city approved the plans for Live Nation’s venue on the Central Eastside. Live Nation faces opposition from musicians and existing venue owners who point to the company’s practices of shutting out competition. [Willamette Week]

Early Warning for City Budget

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has taken the unusual step of warning about budget shortfalls for next year, just a month after the current budget went into effect. The city went through a round of cuts earlier this spring, and made up for gaps with an infusion of funding that may not be available next year. [Willamette Week]

Cell Phone Ban for Lake Oswego Schools

Portland is considering a new cell phone policy while some individual high schools have taken steps to ban them during the day, starting this month. [OPB]

This mural by Devin Finley features a sacred forest in northwest Cameroon and the Bafut Palace, which has been the “fulcrum of political power for over 400 years,” in the words of the artist.

It’s located in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Northeast MLK Boulevard, a few blocks south of Lombard.

A shoutout to the readers who answered correctly: Carrie Miller-Conley, Piyawee Ruenjinda, Phil Hochstetler, and Esther Mae.
