✈️ What you’ll find at PDX’s new terminal

August 15, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Happy 15th Birthday to the film “Coraline”! Catch the family-friendly horror movie, which is being re-released today in 3D for a limited run in theaters. Or you can visit the giant cat sculptures scattered around Portland. Notably, “Coraline” was the Hillsboro-based studio Laika’s first first stop-motion feature.

What's CITY Talking About?

Hotter City Seeing Tree Deaths

Portland is trying to address hotter summers with more trees. But recently planted saplings died in great numbers during the city’s record-hot July. In one case, a city contractor failed to water saplings in multiple eastside neighborhoods. The cause of another die-off, in Montavilla, remains unclear, the parks bureau says. [Willamette Week]

  • Related: Beverly Beach State Park, a popular campground on the coast, recently reopened after an 11-month closure, during which state park officials cleared 200 trees. New weather patterns meant the spruce trees were dying off when they weren’t getting enough water. [OPB]

PDX’s New Terminal Opened

When the new terminal opened yesterday, it meant new shops and restaurants for PDX International, a reversal of pandemic-inflicted closings. Several classic Portland businesses — Pendleton, Sizzle Pie, Blue Star Donuts, Grassa, and Steven Smith Teamaker — now have shops there. Bonus: You don’t have to buy a ticket to see the new terminal, either. [KGW]

Hairy, humanlike creatures known as Bigfoot, Sasquatch, or Yeti have been spotted all over the world, but in the Pacific Northwest they’re pretty much our unofficial mascot. Cliff Barackman of the popular Animal Planet television show, “Finding Bigfoot,” has made it his life mission to legitimize their existence. He shares some of his findings. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

A couple people wrote in recently with recommendations for friendly bike shops after I published a list of the best in the city:

“Stoic Wheels on Hawthorne is a full service bike shop run by an amazing guy named Brian who charges a fair price for good work, sans the bike shop snobbery!” — Hays

“Sadly, as I learned last week when I got a flat on my ebike, most shops won't even look at them. River City seems to only want to touch ebikes they sell. Four different shops turned me away. But a few shops that are willing to work on any bike, with no judgments are TomCat in Brooklyn and Nomad in Rose City Park. TomCat is tiny, but always willing to help people out and unlike some of the other shops, isn't pretentious. Nomad actually builds custom ebikes, so they are not intimidated by replacing non motorized flat tire on a bike.” — Bryan M. Vance
