Just ‘do what I say, not as I do’
August 14, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! Yesterday’s cloudy, wet weather was a reminder of what’s coming. Maybe you’ve been meaning to paddleboard on the Willamette River, go for a hike on Mount Hood, or bike over to The Bluffs to watch the sunset! Seize the day! There’s warmer weather on the way.

What's CITY Talking About?
Nike’s Increased Jet Emissions
In 2016, Nike pledged to halve their carbon emissions, but company executives have taken a “do what I say, not as I do” approach, increasing the use of Nike’s two company jets. Carbon emissions from the jets have increased nearly 20% since 2015, thanks to 15 visits to Cape Cod, half a dozen visits to the Cayman Islands, and other luxury destinations. Violent Crime Is Down
Portland saw a drop in murder in the first half of the year — 34 homicides, down from 41 in 2023 — according to statistics from the Major Cities Chiefs Association. Shootings are also down significantly since 2022 — with 522 shootings as of early August (versus 826 shootings by that point in 2022). [KOIN]
Later Start at Beaverton Schools
Beaverton high schools will start an hour later this fall — at 8:45 a.m. Middle schools will move to a 9:30 a.m. start — which is five to fifteen minutes later than in the past. A host of data has shown teenagers’ mental and physical health is better if they can sleep later. [Oregonian]
- Related: All Portland and Beaverton students can get free breakfast and lunch at public schools, starting this year. Universal free lunch is having a “national moment,” the Oregonian reports, including presumptive Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz‘s viral moment last year when Minnesota schoolchildren mobbed him with hugs after he signed a universal free lunch into law there.
