Homebuilding Slump?
Developers this year are planning to build only about 500 apartments in Portland — filing for the lowest number of permits since 2009 — according to projections from Portland-based firm ECONorthwest. City and state officials are seeking more home construction, but the high cost of development as well as the reluctance of investors are proving an obstacle. [Oregonian 🔒]
Officially The Worst Railroad Crossing
Southeast 11th Avenue and Division Street has received the most official complaints of any railroad crossing in the state, with nearby 12th Avenue and Division Street a close second. But railroads have the authority to carry out their business as they see fit, sometimes to the detriment of safety (never mind commuters). [Oregonian]
$1,600 for Each Oregonian?
Every Oregonian could receive $1,600 a year (up from $750) if voters approve Measure 118 in November. Increasing the corporate minimum tax would bring in more funding than previously anticipated for the Oregon Rebate, as the proposal is called — thus increasing the amount that would be distributed. Before I go, there were a couple slip-ups in yesterday’s newsletter: The events listed were for Monday, though they appeared under a different dateline.
And yesterday’s newsletter misidentified what kind of food Queen of Sheba offers. It’s a beloved Ethiopian restaurant. We regret those errors and appreciate all the sharp-eyed readers who brought those to our attention.
