😞 Beloved Portland restaurant closes after blaze

August 9, 2024 · — Adrian González

Hello, Friday! I’m a little mad at myself for not watching more of the Olympics this week, but what a delight to see all the local heroes making us proud, like former Oregon Duck Cole Hocker, who picked up a gold medal in the men’s 1,500 meter competition this week. 🥇

Let’s summersault into the news.

What's CITY Talking About?

🛩️ Who’s to Blame for Boeing’s Missing Door Plug?

After extensive investigations and two days of hearings, neither Boeing nor the National Transportation Safety Bureau have been able to determine how a door plug for a 737 Max was delivered to Alaska Airlines without crucial bolts, leading to the door coming off a plane after departing from PDX. Several Boeing employees testified about a culture of chaos and relentless pressure, including the feeling of being treated like cockroaches. [CNN]

A fire early Monday morning caused extensive damage to Nob Hill staple Caffe Mingo and adjacent Bar Mingo, leading both to close indefinitely to assess the damage. As of this writing, a GoFundMe page in support of staff had raised nearly $30,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation. [Oregonian]

🔏 KOIN Workers Stuck in Labor Limbo

Unionized production staff at KOIN TV say they've been facing union-busting tactics from management at Nexstar Media Group since the conglomerate purchased the local station in 2016. Despite recent court rulings ordering Nexstar to negotiate in good faith, employees have operated without a labor contract since 2017. Staff and union leaders are considering strikes and legal actions against Nexstar. [Portland Mercury]

🟢 County Drug Deflection Program Could Be Back On

The Oregon Criminal Justice Commission has agreed to reconsider Clackamas County’s $1.1 million grant proposal for a drug possession deflection program after initially rejecting it — the only rejection of the 28 counties that applied. The grant would be used to build a system that would prioritize treatment over criminal enforcement for people arrested with small amounts of drugs. A CJC committee meeting on the matter is yet to be scheduled. [Willamette Week]

Hey Portland editor Rachel Monahan thought this one might be tough, but in the spirit of recommending a summer spot to check out, she included a shot of the Clackamas River and the bridge overhead at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, Oregon. My advice is to reserve a campsite and make a weekend out of it.

Shouts to readers Andrew M., Jocelyn M., and Christa K. for writing in with the correct answer! “We just paddled it a couple of weeks ago,” said Christa.
