🥫 A guide to emergency preparedness

Hey, friends! It’s City Cast editor Adrian González filling in for Rachel this week. Between all the wildfire smoke I’ve been breathing and the barrage of disaster news, I feel like I can’t keep up. So, I’m taking my therapist’s advice to use my time for something more productive than worrying and sharing some tips on how to prepare for emergencies.

📉 What Intel and Nike’s Struggles Mean for Oregon
The Beaver state has long relied on two of its biggest employers, sometimes even crafting corporate tax laws to benefit them, but some experts are worried that Nike and Intel’s recent financial woes could affect the state’s growth. Intel announced plans last week to eliminate 15,000 jobs, and Nike is expecting low sales after already cutting 5% of its workforce last year. [Oregonian 🔒]

🚨 Street Racing Crackdown
Portland police spent the weekend coordinating with multiple agencies to disrupt street racing takeovers, an effort they called “highly successful”. According to the police, preliminary numbers show that officers made at least 140 traffic stops, towed 21 vehicles, and arrested more than 20 people. [KGW]

🏞️ New Beginnings at Crater Lake
Kansas-based ExplorUS took over concessions at Crater Lake National Park in April after an unflattering exit by the previous vendor and made quick work of reopening the park’s amenities. Despite lingering structural issues, the company hired nearly 200 staff and has improved employee accommodations as it heads towards the busiest time of the summer. [Oregonian]
