Trump: 'They ripped down Portland'

July 1, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Hello! Welcome to Monday — and a new month! ☀️ July offers so many fun options for being outside ⬇️

What's CITY Talking About?

Not ‘Cruel and Unusual’ To Punish Public Camping

Cities no longer have to offer shelter in order to enforce a public camping ban — after the city of Grants Pass, Oregon, has won their U.S. Supreme Court case. The decision overturns a previous ruling that deemed punishing people who lacked access to shelter was “cruel and unusual.” Locally, there appears to be no immediate effect; Portland’s new camping ban was already slated to go into effect today. Trump Says Portland Was 'Ripped Down'

During last week’s debate, former President Donald Trump wildly exaggerated the impact of the social justice protests on Portland: “What they have done to some people that are so innocent, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. What you have done, how you have destroyed the lives of so many people, when they ripped down Portland, when they ripped down many other cities.” Is there any point in fact-checking? Regardless, the 100 nights of Portland protest took place in 2020, under Trump’s tenure. [Oregonian]

This week in favorite bumper stickers: I spotted this one a few weeks back. It seems apropos, in part because I’ve been enjoying hearing birdsongs on summer hikes. 😀
