🚗 Avoid I-5 in SW Portland this weekend

June 26, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! Did you perfect your route for a neighborhood walk during the pandemic? I found some excellent purple roses to stop and smell in Kerns, for example. “The Portland Book of Dates,” author Eden Dawn, who today shares her Concordia neighborhood secrets, found some backyard chickens you can feed.

What are your favorite destinations to walk by in your neighborhood? Please email me to share your recommendations.

What's CITY Talking About?

Constitutional Protection for Abortion, Gender Identity

A possible 2026 ballot measure would constitutionally protect the right to an abortion in Oregon, and “ban discrimination on account of pregnancy-related decisions, gender identity, sexual orientation, and sex,” Willamette Week reports. Progressive groups announced the effort exactly two years after the U.S. Supreme Court decision Dobbs v. Jackson, which ended a federally protected right to abortion. [Willamette Week]

Oaks Park Ride Resumes

The Oaks Park ride that stranded roughly 30 riders upside-down earlier this month is in good working order. An inspection “found no mechanical, technical or maintenance issues and that the operator was not at fault,” OPB reports the amusement park as saying. Officials there didn’t release the cause of the issue, citing a lawsuit, but the AtmosFEAR ride will resume 180- and 260-degree rides though won’t go fully upside down for now. [OPB]

I-5 in Southwest Closed All Weekend

Warning: Avoid I-5 in Southwest this weekend. The highway will be closed to traffic from Terwilliger Boulevard to the Capitol Highway, in both directions, from 9 p.m. on Friday night to (at the latest) 5 a.m. Monday morning. [Oregonian]

Where Is It?

Last week’s scavenger hunt was a stumper. No one got the answer to a photo taken of one of Portland’s trendiest restaurants: Yaowarat. Does no one use the facilities there?

This week we have a reader submission:

Thanks to Stephan Vertal for this photo of a sculpture, which, if helps, has a briefcase at his feet. (A reminder: Please feel free to submit your own idea as well. Just email me a photo or your idea.)
