What's CITY Talking About?

No Imminent Eruption Predicted

True, Mount St. Helens is the most active volcano in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. True, it has experienced 350 small earthquakes this year. But any suggestions that it’s about to blow its top again are overblown. [Oregonian]

Intel To Cut Staff

Intel, Oregon’s largest private employer, saw sales fall 20% in 2022 and then 14% in 2023. To cut costs, the company has announced another round of staffing cuts, though it’s not clear if they’ll be in Oregon or even the U.S. In fact, last year, the number of Intel jobs in Washington County grew by 1,000. 2nd Smallest Apartments in the Country

Shockingly, Seattle and Portland outrank New York (as well as every other large U.S. city) for the smallest-sized apartments — at least for those built in the last decade. According to a report by apartment listing service RentCafe, Seattle apartments, built between 2014 and 2023, are the tiniest (at an average of 661 square feet), and Portland comes in at No. 2, with 685 square feet. $750 for Every Oregonian?

$750 for Every Oregonian? Plus, Unclaimed Treasures and Rising Utility Shutoffs

Today in Portland signs, I’ve been enjoying the guerilla-style sticker art that’s popped up on bikeways across the city, including particularly: “Warning: Stop looking, learn how to see.”
