What's CITY Talking About?

No Naked Bike Ride for This Year

For the first time in two decades, there will be no official Portland World Naked Bike Ride. The signature Portland-weird event has taken place every year since 2004, originally as a protest of Big Oil. At its peak, 10,000 naked riders took part. It sounds like organizers hope to bring it back next year, but they needed a year off to get better organization and leadership in place, given its popularity. [BikePortland]

Cougar Closes Angel’s Rest Trail

The U.S. Forest Service temporarily closed Angel’s Rest and surrounding trails after a cougar stalked a runner on Tuesday. To protect against cougars, hike in a group and carry bear spray or an air horn, which may be particularly advisable on these trails once they reopen. [KGW]

The French Sports Bra

The Sports Bra, which is the first U.S. bar to show only women’s sporting events, will be popping up at a festival in Cannes, France, next week. They’ll serve drinks poolside at a local French villa and (naturally) be showing women’s sports on the screens. [Oregonian]

Former Portland Mayor and Sexual Abuser Dies, Curbside Battery Recycling, and Traffic Camera Shooting

On the Friday news roundup, an Oregon governor and Portland mayor died long after revelations that he repeatedly raped a teenager. Portland police arrested a man alleged to have shot out traffic enforcement cameras. And battery recycling has come to Portland curbsides.

A correction before I go: A typo in yesterday’s newsletter had the end of the Civil War taking place during President Ronald Reagan’s tenure in office. No, that Republican did not end slavery. The correct date is 1865! Our apologies.

I’ll see you next week!
