🪫 Portland’s recycling upgrade
June 11, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! Powell’s Books is returning to the airport. They closed their PDX shop in 2020, but they’ll be back in 2026.

What's CITY Talking About?
Portland Now Has Curbside Battery Recycling
You can now recycle batteries as part of Portland’s regular trash pickup. It will help you safely get rid of lithium-ion batteries, which pose a fire risk if not handled properly and are becoming more common. But alkaline batteries are also included in the program. Batteries need to be placed beside the recycling in a clear one-quart plastic bag. [KOIN]
- Don’t recycle wireless devices, fitness bands, electric toothbrushes, cell phones, laptops, “singing” birthday cards, vape pens, and e-cigarettes.
- Not Included in this service (at least not yet) are businesses and larger apartment buildings (with more than four units).
2 James Beard Awards for Portland
This year, Portland notched two of the country’s prestigious food and drink accolades. Langbaan won the James Beard Award for outstanding restaurant — a national honor. And Gregory Gourdet, of Kann, won the James Beard award for best regional chef (in the Northwest and Pacific, which covers Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington as well). That is Gourdet’s third James Beard Award in three years. [Eater]
All I know how to do is play music architecturally. Someone took my guitar away, so I'll just start banging on some pickle barrels.
Why a Portland Developer Is Losing It All
One of the city’s most creative and prolific developers, Kevin Cavenaugh of Guerilla Development, explains why he and others are losing their buildings to the bank but also why he’s still very, very optimistic about Portland. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
Coastal Tar Cleanup Complete
The Washington and Oregon coasts have now been cleared of 2,000 pounds of tar after pieces as large as sand dollars washed ashore last month. For the last three weeks, federal and state agencies have been working on a cleanup that spanned 36 miles. It’s still not clear where the tar came from. [KGW]

It’s my love letter to the city. One of many, and I just want to keep making as many as I can.
Why It’s a Great Time To Invest in Portland — From a Developer Who’s Going Bankrupt
Many developers are sweating as Portland office buildings and apartments fall in value. (That’s even as homes remain too expensive for many.) One of the city’s most creative and prolific developers, Kevin Cavenaugh of Guerilla Development, explains why he and other developers are losing their buildings to the bank but also why he’s still very, very optimistic about Portland.
