What's CITY Talking About?
Gunning Down Red Light Cameras
Someone is driving around shooting out Portland’s new traffic enforcement cameras. There are 27 cameras in the city that monitor speed limits and stopping at red lights, and the alleged gunfire vandal has struck seven times, says the Portland Police Bureau. Police haven’t confirmed that every act has been against a camera. But they did release footage of one such incident and say the suspect has caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to city property. [BikePortland]
Notice of OHSU Layoffs
Five hundred Oregon Health & Science University workers will lose their jobs in layoffs. The academic hospital system has been warning that costs exceeded revenue since this spring. At the same time, OHSU is in the process of purchasing a competitor, Legacy Health. [Willamette Week]
Better Tech in Emergency Notice of Earthquakes
New technological advancements are making an early warning system for earthquakes more reliable. In addition to seismic sensors, ShakeAlert is using GPS technology to measure the ground’s movement up and down. The system currently sends Oregon, Washington, and California cell phone users an alert a few seconds in advance of a major earthquake. [KOIN]
