What's CITY Talking About?

No Mussel Harvesting on Northern Oregon Coast

Twenty people have fallen ill after eating mussels harvested along a stretch of the Oregon Coast. The condition known as paralytic shellfish poisoning came from mussels found near Oceanside, at Hug Point, and near Seaside. As of Sunday, state officials barred mussel harvesting from Seal Rock State Park north to the Washington state line. [KOIN]

Fewer Kids in Oregon

Only Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont have a lower birth rate than Oregon. The state and the nation’s birth rate keeps falling. 75 To Monitor Oregon State Hospital’s Security Cameras

Oregon State Hospital is hiring a team of 75 people to monitor the hospital’s 1,200 security cameras 24/7. Previously, just three people monitored the footage. The stepped-up security comes after a federal investigation found the psychiatric hospital had failed to keep patients safe from assaults. [Willamette Week]

When Oregon's Second Largest City Flooded

LaVeta Gilmore Jones’ mother lived in what was then Oregon’s second largest city. She’s now co-director of the Vanport Mosaic Festival and working to keep the memory of the once thriving multiracial community alive. It was 76 years ago that Vanport was destroyed in a catastrophic flood, and never rebuilt.
