🍔 The local burger chain fined for withholding tips
May 10, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning, Portland! 🥵 It will be downright hot today — and pretty warm this weekend too! But be careful if you get a chance to go out on the rivers ⚠️ They’re still dangerously cold, with swift currents 🥶

What's CITY Talking About?
$316K for Withholding Tips
The local chain Little Big Burger improperly gave managers tips meant for workers, the feds have determined. The U.S. Department of Labor investigated nine of the restaurant’s locations in Portland, as well as another half a dozen in Oregon and Washington. Little Big Burger now owes $316,000 in fines and improperly withheld tips. [KOIN]
Police Nix Drug Diversion Program
Multnomah County had the funding to reboot a drug diversion program called LEAD used in 20 states that was previously used in Portland. But Portland and Gresham police have failed to buy into the program that gets drug offenders into treatment instead of prison. They cite a budget crunch. [Willamette Week]
Camping Ban Into Effect
Enforcement of Portland’s new camping ban can start immediately after City Council passed a scaled-down version of the one approved last summer and put on hold by the courts. People experiencing homelessness who receive a shelter spot and refuse it can face up to a week in jail. [Oregonian 🔒]

👏 Election trivia: The city of Portland has no elected officials on the May ballot. For the first time, the fall election will feature ranked choice voting: meaning you’ll be able to not just vote but rank the candidates in order of preference. It’s a bit like a primary and a general election all in one.
