Meet the new kings of Burgerville

May 7, 2024 · — John Notarianni

Good morning, Portland! City Cast Portland executive producer John Notarianni here. It’s felt like the rainy season will never end, but I’m keeping an eye on the horizon: We could be seeing temperatures in the upper 80s by the end of the week! ☀️

What's CITY Talking About?

The New Kings of Burgerville

Local fast food chain Burgerville plans to expand with support from a team of local investors, including its CEO, Ed Casey, and former Dutch Bros CEO Joth Ricci (who will become the company’s executive chairman). The deal could lead to as many as 10 new restaurants opening within the next year. Beleaguered local firm Sortis Capital won’t be among the investors, despite earlier reports. [Willamette Week]

Portland State on the DEQ’s Naughty List

Portland State University was fined more than $25,000 by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality in March. The problem: The university failed to do safety tests on two underground fuel tanks, which were also found to have inadequate release detection equipment. Fines were also issued to Portland’s East Side Plating (for hazardous waste storage violations) and Shamrock Food Company (for inadequate stormwater planning and monitoring). [Statesman Journal]

Ballot Mixup For Gresham Voters

Animal lovers should be sure to double-check your ballot for this month’s primary election before you mail it in: Multnomah County is issuing new ballots to about 9,300 people in and around Gresham after mistakenly omitting a proposed $380 million bond for improvements to the Oregon Zoo. The revised ballots for the May 21 election were mailed out on Friday. [Oregonian 🔒]
