Your guide to Portland’s newest holiday

May 2, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan

Good morning, Portland! Today is the day before 503 Day! We want to celebrate our city tomorrow. So do ”Simpsons” writer Bill Oakley, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, and City Commissioner Carmen Rubio, who all weighed in with their ideas for the new holiday 🔽

What's CITY Talking About?

Negotiations Failed to End PSU Standoff

The takeover of Portland State’s library continued Wednesday, though 50 of the protesters left the building after the administration offered immunity from prosecution and promised not to suspend or expel student protesters. But not everyone left, and it’s not clear how many remain — or if the 50 will return after a breakdown in the negotiations. [Oregonian]

Lobbying Violation for Shelter Contractor

The nonprofit Urban Alchemy violated city lobbying rules by failing to disclose their months-long successful effort to become Portland’s contractor at outdoor mass shelters. Urban Alchemy spent more than $1,000 — which is one threshold for when outside groups must disclose their lobbying. The city auditor issued an official warning letter to Urban Alchemy. [Oregonian]

Outside Group Spends $60K+ for DA Mike Schmidt

The Working Families Party of Oregon recently received the largest political contribution of the year: $340,000 from the national Working Families Party’s political action committee. Now the Oregon affiliate has started spending to reelect Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, with $60,000 spent so far, apparently “on live phone calls (as distinct from robocalls) from the Working Families Party extolling Schmidt’s virtue,” Willamette Week reports. On 503 Day, what I like to do is sit in the yard ... and try to get as tan as possible, even if it’s 48 degrees and overcast.
