TurboTax overpaid some Oregonians’ taxes
May 1, 2024 · — Rachel Monahan
Good morning! Portland often has high-profile political protests (100+ consecutive nights after George Floyd’s killing). So maybe the surprise is that only now a protest over Gaza became big news 🔽

What's CITY Talking About?
Portland State Closed for Second Day Over Protests
Demonstrators calling for a cease-fire in Gaza took over Portland State University’s library late Monday, and the university has now canceled classes for a second day in a row. Leading city officials have asked the protesters to leave voluntarily. The protests at Reed College and the University of Oregon also grew Monday. [Oregonian]
Detailed Involvement by First Lady
Newly released emails show Oregon first lady Aimee Kotek Wilson’s growing involvement in official policy — as well as concern from staff and other officials: The Bureau of Labor and Industries was surprised in January when Kotek Wilson was unexpectedly added to the commissioner's lunch meeting with the governor. Also, the governor asked a staffer to help Kotek Wilson’s friend who was upset with a supervisor. [OPB]
Oregon IDs TurboTax Problem
TurboTax software incorrectly calculated the taxes of an unknown number of Oregonians, resulting in smaller refunds for affected taxpayers. It’s not clear whether taxpayers will be alerted that they’re owed more money. The Oregon Department of Revenue informed Intuit in early April of the problem. But the company has yet to publicly acknowledge it. [Oregonian 🔒]

Your Guide to May in Portland
From checking out a mausoleum to getting outdoors with an NW forest pass, there’s no shortage of things to do this month in Portland. So the City Cast Portland team is here to narrow down your May bucket list to the must-dos.

Before I go: cast your vote on a new slogan for Portland.
Honorable mentions to the late-arriving suggestions:
- “Portland: Seattle’s dirty little sister”
- “City of beauty, resilience, and grit”
- “City of roses amidst the thorns”
Also, I’m glad there is at least the one determined “Portlandia” fan who wants to keep “Put a bird on it.”
