🍗 The strip club that’s becoming a fast food joint

Good morning, Portland! Today some good news on who’s included in Oregon’s economic successes 🔽

What's CITY Talking About?

Women-Owned Businesses Do Well Here

Oregon is the fourth best state for women small business owners, according to finance site Lendio. “Women filed 15 percent of Oregon’s patents — more than in any other top-ranked states,” Portland Monthly also reports. And (fun fact) women own Portland’s oldest topless bar and first vegan doughnut shop. [Portland Monthly]

Record Number of Oregonians With Work

A record 83% of Oregonians ages 25 to 54 have a job. That’s more than ever before — and good news for people in their prime working years. But it’s also an indicator of the state’s good economic health. In fact, the share of Oregonians of all ages who have a job or are looking for work is higher than it's been in a dozen years. Economists like high numbers in workforce participation, because it helps create a larger economy and a larger tax base. [Oregonian 🔒]

Chick-fil-A To Take Over a Portland Strip Club

The fast-food chain Chick-fil-A once presented a moral conundrum for many Portlanders: a superior fast-food chicken sandwich but terrible politics. Activists were protesting the company when it opened the Hillsboro location in 2016, because the company opposed marriage equality. It has since ceased its donations to Christian groups. Now Chick-fil-A plans to convert an East Portland strip club, The Venue Gentleman’s Club, to open its first location within city limits. The club was the site of a deadly shooting earlier this month. Where Is It?

Last week’s scavenger hunt was for Willamette Falls, a horseshoe-shaped waterfall that is the country’s second largest, measured by volume. It may get less attention around here than, say, scenic Multnomah Falls in the Gorge, because public access to the waterfront is limited.

It’s a culturally significant site for Northwest tribes, and there are efforts on both the West Linn and Oregon City sides of the river to create more public access.

A shoutout to the first 10 readers who named the spot: Tracy Ross, Sherrie Atherly, Whitney Jones, Nanci Courtney, Derek Badstreet, Christine Stroud, Josh Todd, Erik Larson, Marilyn M, and Ryan Lowe, who wrote:

“Our home sits on the ridge above it. We can hear it year-round and when the leaves aren’t on the trees and the river is at its largest we can see most of it. As a whitewater kayaker, I love the sound of the waterfall. When the salmon are running, we have one of the most amazing bird shows above the waterfall. Hawks, baldheaded, and huge vultures flyover among many other birds. It is truly one of the most unique places I’ve ever been.”

In honor of the recent “Portlandia”-related apology, here’s a location where I have the uncomfortable thought that the show occasionally felt a bit more like reality TV than parody. Do you know where this is?

Is This Portland Bar the Global Home of Women’s Sports?

Portland’s Sports Bra is the first bar in America dedicated to playing only women’s sports. Following this week’s news that The Sports Bra plans to begin opening franchises nationwide, we’re revisiting a conversation host Claudia Meza had with owner Jenny Nguyen about her role in raising the profile of college and professional women’s basketball, in our city and across the country.

Spring is pleasant ☀️I’ll see you for more of it tomorrow!
